Sometimes things can be hard to deal with. Sometimes you just want to drown out all the pain, all the hurt, and all the feelings and emotions that may be flowing through your veins. For some people, the way to cope is through substance abuse. Each of these writers succumbs to an addiction and details his struggles to recover from it.
These three books have raw, brutal and unfiltered dialogue. Each of these books deal with drug addictions and finding that anchor to keep them from doing those drugs. |

My Friend Leonard
by James Frey - 416 pages James Frey writes My Friend Leonard, a book that continues the stories of James, Lilly and Leonard featured in A Million Little Pieces. James finds his anchor in the love of his life, Lilly, but after her death, he finds himself struggling to stay positive and finding reasons to live. James copes with her death and other events that occur throughout the book by living the life she never could without drugs. James falls in and out of different relationships and jobs, but still at the end of the day, would go to Lilly's grave and tell her about his day. When James moves to LA, things start to fall apart for him. His best friend dying, but Lilly is always there, reminding him to stay sober. Readers who enjoyed A Million Little Pieces may appreciate this book as an ending to all of James Frey’s madness. |
Tweak
by Nic Sheff - 322 pages Nic Sheff writes about his life-long battle with falling in and out of drug addiction in the book Tweak. He realizes what he has lost, and what he could have done with his life without drugs, and yet he continues to fall down a dark path. Nic copes with his addiction by staying addicted. Only having moments of time where he would be sober that never lasted. Throughout the book he deals with constant highs and overdoses. With his raw details, and unfiltered thoughts written out throughout the chapters this book is constantly pulling you in and setting the scene for you so you can feel as if you are there. |
Candy
by Luke Davies - 293 pages This story is about Candy, a girlfriend and a nickname for a drug. It is narrated by the anonymous love of her life. A story of love and addiction. A story of the three H’s: Her, Him and Heroin. The narrator of the book writes about how his life flipped upside down when he fell in love with Candy. How he began using more, and couldn’t stop. When she wanted to do more, so did he. It was a neverending cycle. He wants to make things better, but is never able to. By remembering her beautiful blue eyes and how pure she was when they met, he attempts to stay sober. If you enjoy a love story with a twist, Candy is the book for you. You will never get bored reading this book. Due to the different ways they would attempt to keep their relationship strong you’re rooting for them to succeed, but you know they’re pulling one another down. |
